In the wake of the rising danger from e-waste, the Jammu Municipal Corporation has taken steps to start strictly following the rules of e-waste disposal.
Jammu Municipal Corporation and Pollution Control Board have set up e-waste collection centres at nine places in the city where people can deposit e-waste. These e-waste collection centres have been set up at Gangyal, Narwal, Karna Market, Gulab Singh Road, and Panama Chowk in the city. Two e-waste collection centres have also been set up in Srinagar.
Under the E-Waste Management Rules, 2016, certain agencies have been attached to the corporation that will collect and transport the waste. The corporation is in the process of making people aware not to throw e-waste here and there and hand it over to these agencies.
Dr Vinod Sharma, Health Officer, Jammu Municipal Corporation, informed that e-waste emits hazardous chemicals like lead, glass cables, hexavalent chromium, barium, and beryllium, which contaminate underground water through the soil. This is also causing air and soil pollution, and hence the pollution control board has been asked to take measures in this regard.
