The COVID19 pandemic has unleashed cracks in the waste disposal and management system of various countries. Especially in poor countries where its disposal was not proper, many countries were not very equipped to handle the sudden surge in plastic waste
Now, all that waste has ended up in landfills and water bodies. A large portion of this waste is infested with body fluids, diseases and pathogens, Which may result in infection and spreading of diseases and a breeding ground for diseases spreading vectors like mosquitoes. Besides face masks, protective gear and gloves which have contributed to the waste, testing kits and the 8 billion registered doses of vaccine have resulted in used syringes and needles contributing to producing a surge in plastic waste by adding tons of trash in one just one year.
COVID-19 has also resulted in more than 700,000 litres of chemical waste. Speaking to journalists in Geneva, the agency’s chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the report “is a reminder that although the pandemic is the most severe health crisis in a century, it is connected with many other challenges that countries face.
