Gujarat University to have a Centre of Excellence in climate change

In an attempt to spread awareness about climate change-related measures, Gujarat University in Ahmedabad announced that they will set up a Centre Of Excellence (CoE) on climate change.

The Centre of Excellence will emphasize the development of green cover in the university, training homemakers in gardening, renewable energy generation, and water conservation. The COE is backed by the Gujarat Climate Change Department with a budget of Rs 1.5 crore. The Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University Prof Himanshu Pandya said that a balanced development approach will be followed under this program. He further added that collection of biodegradable waste from the surroundings and composting of the waste through a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) would be done. “Two STPs would be set up on campus along with additional rooftop solar panels. The treated water will be used for 47 gardens of the University,” VC said.

Dr. Nainesh Modi, Professor in charge of the Centre of Excellence on Climate Change, Gujarat University highlighted that the unit will run public awareness campaigns for environmental conservation in society and steps will be taken to make the campus sustainable. The new initiative will also focus on energy-saving measures, and promote the use of renewable energy resources to reduce carbon emissions.
