A massive fire broke out at the garbage landfill at Delhi’s Bhalswa on Tuesday. This is one of the largest landfills and Delhi and covers around 500 acres of land. Garbage dumping at the Bhalswa landfill was started in 1994 and the estimated current weight of the waste is about 80 lakh tonnes.
The fire has worsened the AQI in the nearby areas as the firefighters are still trying to control the fire. This is the fourth case of landfill fire this month as the previous three cases were reported from the Ghazipur landfill.
As per the reports, the permissible limit of the landfill is 20 metres but the management hasn’t restricted the dumping of waste in the landfill which has increased the risk to the environment and the humans. The workers living close to the landfill have already left their homes as the harmful smoke has affected the atmosphere.
One of the MCD officials said that the fire at the landfill is a natural phenomenon as the methane produced in the garbage catch fire with the rising temperature but the firefighter working on the spot highlighted the mismanagement of the civic body. He said that an inert layer of sand should be put after every layer of garbage to avoid such incidents.
