A unique citizen-led brand audit conducted by Break Free From Plastics (BFFP)“ titled “Brand Audit 2021 -UNWRAPPED,” in 44 locations across Bengaluru, Bettahalasur, Kodagu and Mysuru identified that Food packaging and household items are the biggest culprits in plastic pollution.
The data-driven audit highlighted that single-layer packaging accounted for a total of 73% of total plastic pollution with 60% food packaging and 20% being the rest of packaging material.
The report mentioned that 288 volunteers audited 1,24,390 packaging pieces, 2,663 brands and found that the local/national brands accounted for 73% while the international brands contributed 27% to the total plastic packaging waste. The report also mentioned the contribution of single-use plastic such as polythene bags, pouches and covers used in local daily use.
The report published by the Hindu highlighted that the waste pickers have been managing waste in the city and the manufacturers must acknowledge these waste pickers as actual partners for the collection & management of this generated plastic waste.
Pinky Chandran, Trustee of Hasiru Dala highlighted that there is an urgent need to invest in the ‘recycling infrastructure & financial mechanism’ to strengthen the organization’s climate action policy. “As per the new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) corporates need to step up and look at redesigning packaging and must not co-opt false solutions that focus on chemical recycling or coprocessing in cement kilns,” she added.
