According to new research from Greenpeace International, nearly 90% of Indians support cutting plastic manufacturing to tackle pollution and climate change.
The analysis, based on a survey of over 19,000 individuals in 19 countries, including India, conducted in February 2024, shows high international support for actions such as eliminating single-use plastics and promoting reusable alternatives. In India, 87% of respondents support reducing plastic output to combat pollution, while 89% feel the impending Global Plastics Treaty should require a change from single-use to reusable packaging. More than 90% of Indians were concerned about the effects of plastics on children's health.
Greenpeace is calling for a Global Plastics Treaty that requires a minimum 75% decrease in plastic manufacturing by 2040, which is vital for protecting biodiversity and keeping global temperatures below the 1.5°C threshold. The organization urged governments and corporations to listen to the public and set aggressive goals for sustainable alternatives and environmental protection.
The international world is preparing for the fourth conference of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution, which will take place in Ottawa from April 23 to April 29, 2024. The final round of negotiations is slated for November 2024 in Busan, South Korea.
