Here's how plastic pollution adversely impacts J&K's environment:
Contaminated water bodies: Plastic bags, bottles, and other items end up in lakes, rivers, and streams. This not only chokes these water sources but also harms aquatic life that mistake plastic for food.
Polluted soil: Improper disposal of plastic contaminates the soil. This affects its fertility and the health of plants that grow in it.
Threat to wildlife: Animals often ingest plastic debris, leading to injuries, starvation, and even death.
There is an absence of a scientific system for waste collection and segregation at the source. This means plastic isn't properly separated from other waste, making it difficult to recycle or dispose of safely.
Possible Solutions:
Strict enforcement of the ban: India's ban on single-use plastics needs stricter enforcement to curb their use.
Improved waste management: Implementing scientific waste segregation and collection systems is crucial.
