ExxonMobil, one of the world’s leading oil companies, will have to face trial over its efforts to deny climate change
The oil giant has been accused of deceiving investors about ‘the risks of global warming to its business’ in Massachusetts Court. There has been a wave of cases in which fossil fuel companies have been dragged to court over the accusation of making living conditions worse for residents of a city and the government having to spend taxpayer money to fix such problems. The latest IPCC report also talks about the influence of fossil fuel companies in diluting the intensity of climate action.
There have been repeated instances of fossil fuel companies trying to impede significant policy change through extensive lobbying and suppressing or denying scientific knowledge. A recent strategy of oil companies is to deflect the burden of carbon emissions towards individuals through advertisements and campaigning.
