Egypt will present a new energy strategy for green hydrogen at the climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh in November this year. This could strengthen Egypt's geopolitical position. Along with this, the economy of the country will also be strengthened.
Countries around the world are increasingly looking for reliable sources of energy. Russia is reducing its production of oil and natural gas. Coal, a traditional source of energy, pollutes so much that most countries are focusing on renewable sources to stop or reduce its use. Also, the use of other options like green hydrogen is being considered.
Egypt has many resources needed to become a powerhouse of renewable energy. For example, a large domestic market, ample sunlight, and strong winds blowing in the Gulf of Suez.
The biggest drawback that is visible is government assistance. However, in the last few months, the government has also come forward to promote green hydrogen.
Heike Harmgart, managing director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, told DW: "The Egyptian government's proceeding with substantial funding, prioritizing the use of sea saltwater for green hydrogen, And promotion of special economic zones are all important steps."
Experts estimate that at least two dozen agreements have already been signed with international companies to go ahead with the infrastructural agreements during COP27. The next climate conference is scheduled to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from 6 to 18 November. Harmgart said that during this conference the Egyptian government would present its strategy for green hydrogen.
