The mission sets a target of 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity by 2022, and this target was later increased to 450 GW by 2030. Himachal Pradesh is making use of its abundant hydropower resources through small hydropower projects. The state government has introduced policies and financial incentives to encourage the development of these small hydropower plants. These small-scale projects, with a capacity of up to 25 MW, have been strategically constructed along the rivers and streams that flow across the state. The government's support, such as providing fair prices and making the approval process easier, has helped these projects grow and become a dependable source of clean energy. 


However, there are concerns raised about the potential impact of these hydropower projects on the environment. It has been observed that many households in these projects were already connected to the electricity grid, which raises questions about the need and effectiveness of generating additional electricity through hydropower. Despite the electrification efforts, it has been found that households in these areas continue to rely on traditional fuelwood for cooking and heating. 

Moreover, the utilization of water for power generation in these projects has disrupted local water usage and management systems. This has led to the transfer of water rights to external entities, potentially affecting the livelihoods and water security of local communities.


  • Biomass Power in Punjab


Punjab, a state renowned for its agricultural activities has utilized biomass power as a significant renewable energy source. The state government has implemented policies and incentives to encourage the generation of power from biomass. This has resulted in the establishment of biomass power plants that use agricultural residues, such as paddy straw and wheat straw, to produce electricity. These initiatives not only contribute to reducing agricultural waste and environmental pollution but also provide an additional source of income for farmers through the sale of agricultural residues. The government's support has helped in the growth of the biomass power sector in Punjab, demonstrating the potential of utilizing locally available resources for renewable energy generation. 


However, there are certain limitations and drawbacks associated with these biomass power projects. One concern is regarding the potential consequences on soil health and nutrient depletion as a result of extracting agricultural residues for power generation. Additionally, the transportation and storage of biomass can pose logistical challenges and increase associated costs. 


Challenges and the way forward


As India continues its journey towards a greener future, the progress in the development of renewable energy sources has been remarkable. For example, the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind poses challenges when it comes to integrating them into the power grid and maintaining grid stability. The existing grid infrastructure and storage facilities are often inadequate, limiting the efficient utilization of renewable energy. To address these challenges, it is imperative for the government to prioritize the strengthening of grid infrastructure, the promotion of energy storage technologies, and the implementation of advanced grid management systems.


Another significant challenge lies in securing financing for renewable energy projects. Despite the government's introduction of diverse financial incentives, affordable and long-term financing remains a concern, particularly for smaller developers and projects. o address this issue, the government should explore innovative financing mechanisms like green bonds and risk-sharing arrangements. Additionally, collaboration with financial institutions can help augment the availability of affordable financing options for renewable energy projects.

The impressive growth in solar and wind power installations, along with the accompanying investments and job creation, clearly illustrate the positive outcomes of these measures. However, there is a need to address challenges related to grid integration, financing, and policy stability to ensure sustained growth in the renewable energy sector.
