Desertification Happening in Central Asia

A study published in Geophysical Research Letters in May showed that the Central Asian Region has been slowly turning into desert because of increasing global temperatures.

Scientists studied the data of the past 50 years of the central asian region which includes large portions of China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The study showed that the desert regions have expanded in east and north directions changing the nature of vegetation and making it difficult for cattle to feed. The temperature is increasing and rainfall is scarce. Some regions have dead soil because drought-like situations have prevailed for too long, killing most plants. In some regions of China the rainfall has increased thus increasing the moisture and temperature both which is resulting in faster melting of glaciers.

Climate scientists believe expanding deserts are a global issue. More deserts result in dust storms and heatwaves. They will affect local crop and forest ecosystems. Rapid urbanization, unsustainable methods of agriculture and mining also result in desertification, and asian countries should be paying more attention to these factors.
