Climate change to make droughts more frequent & severe: UN

A new report ‘Drought in numbers’ published by the UN has warned that the world is going to witness more severe cases of droughts due to the rising global temperature. The human-induced activities are already causing water scarcity and affecting billions of people across the world and the new data is pointing out that the situation is going to get worse in the near future, the report added.

The UN desertification agency is currently hosting a climate conference in Abidjan on Ivory Coast. The agency said that about 2.3 billion of the global population is facing the problem of water scarcity and the number is expected to double by 2050.

The report highlighted that Africa is the most affected continent and countries like America, India and Australia faced drastic impacts of the droughts in the past years. “India saw a drought-related shrink of 5 percent to its gross domestic product between 1998 and 2017”, the report said.

The agency's lead scientist Barron Orr said that the policymakers must take more proactive measures rather than focusing on reactive actions. Direct investments to build resilience are needed to tackle the drought-related impacts.
