As winter approaches pollution the AQI spikes high every year. But currently the air quality is alarming with a 'severe' condition declared. In desperate measures, Delhi Government today declared to the Supreme Court that they will consider imposing a complete lockdown in Delhi to control the extreme air pollution.
They further said that the neighbouring NCR region should also come under a lockdown. The pollution can spread to and from this region, thus the same norms must be followed there as well. The GNCTD (Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi) will comply with the week-long shutdown to control the local emissions. The air quality index of Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurgaon stood at 340, 328, 328 and 326 respectively. Thus such a step would only be meaningful if it is applied across the NCR areas.
Owing to the depleting air quality, the Delhi government has already demanded the closure of schools, colleges and other educational institutions for a whole week. All work places are also advised to run on work from home capacity and reduce the usage of vehicles as much as possible. One of the main reasons cited for the deteriorating air quality is the stubble burning. A plea filed by law student Aman Banka and activist Aditya Dubey, who gave suggestions to provide stubble-removing machines for free, to small and marginal farmers .
