COP27: The second week of the conference begins, role of women and water crisis at the centre of discussion

The theme 'Women and Water' were at the center of discussion on Monday at the UN's annual climate conference, COP27, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Through this theme, the role of women in advancing climate solutions and the effects of the climate crisis on water supplies were underlined. Meanwhile, official negotiations continued on key issues to address the challenge of climate change, and UN officials have again called for a consensus on loss and damage.

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) campaigner Ayeshaka Najeeb on Monday painted creative artwork at a youth pavilion, highlighting the role of women in climate action. "About us, without us, nothing," youth climate activist Ayeshaka Najeeb told UN News. She says that women and young girls, in all their diversity, have been leading the climate movement for centuries, and therefore should not be excluded. "They should be co-owners of the climate process and shapers of the agenda, but at the moment they are not, and gender issues are still debated in the negotiation rooms,"  she added.

Women and girls face significant barriers to adapting to the effects of climate change. This has serious economic consequences for them, who have to take on additional responsibilities of caregiving and domestic work without pay after disasters.

And they are often more likely to become victims of violence after a crisis. UN Women, an organization striving for women's empowerment, says that women are not victims, and by giving them representation in national parliaments, climate change policies can be strengthened.
