Chile’s hanging glacier collapses amidst high temperature

The famous Hanging Glacier of Chile broke down on 13 September 2022. This glacier is located at an altitude of 656 feet above the valley formed between two mountains in Queulat National Park. Some tourists who went to visit the National Park captured a video of the collapsing glacier and shared it on social media which went viral.

Climate scientist Raul Cordero of the University of Santiago said that the breaking of ice is a normal process.  But the rapid rate at which the ice is melting at present is a matter of great concern.  He further added that the hanging glacier of Chile, the Ventisquero Colgante, is broken for two reasons- Rising temperature and then heavy rain as the glacier weakened from both unusual weather patterns in the region.

This is not the situation only in Chile, as the impacts of global warming are being witnessed all over the world.  The glaciers of Switzerland, Europe and the Himalayas are melting due to the ever-changing weather which puts people at risk.

Scientists around the world believe that such conditions are due to global warming, which is worsening due to the emission of greenhouse gases by humans.  Just two days ago, a glacier in Switzerland melted and a rocky path came out.  For the first time in 2000 years, it happened when the ice of Glacier 3000K ski resort melted too much.  Due to the terrible heat this year, three times more snow melted than the average melt of the last ten years.  This has led to a rocky road between the Scex Rouge and Zanfleuron glaciers.
