A think tank linked to Japanese technology giant Canon is coming under pressure to remove multiple articles from a research director who describes the climate crisis as “fake news” and compares campaigner Greta Thunberg to a communist.
Dr Taishi Sugiyama of Canon Institute for Global Studies (CIGS), is famous among his colleagues and fellow climate scientists for making indefensible claims that lie right on the edge of ‘climate change denial’ territory. In an article in 2021, he said that there is no such thing as ‘climate catastrophe’, the crisis is created by fake news, polar ice is not melting and global warming is because of the urban heat island effect.
Campaign group ‘Action Speaks Louder’, which has produced a report documenting Sugiyama’s claims, says the institute is “promoting dangerous climate delay and denial” and is demanding Canon withdraws support until the articles, which include a book aimed at school-age children, are removed.
The institute said that it operates on the philosophy of living and working together with different ideas and people for the prosperity and well-being of humankind. Canon, upon being inquired, told The Guardian that the think tank is autonomous, it funds the entity but it does not interfere on the internal matters of the institute. It is not for business or profit.
