India's food needs are growing because its population is growing, which is pushing people to look for new ways to meet those needs that combine science and technology.
At the same time, global climate change makes it harder for traditional farming to meet people's food needs. Smart proteins are environmentally friendly choices. They include lab-grown meat, plant-based replacements, and dairy made from fermentation. Lab-grown meat is made by growing animal muscle cells in controlled environments. It is an alternative that doesn't hurt animals or the earth.
Conventional animal farming uses up 75% of farmland and causes 14–17% of climate change emissions. Smart proteins help fix the problems caused by conventional animal farming. In addition to being good for the environment, these proteins are also good for your health because they lower the risk of diseases linked to animals living in dirty circumstances and reduce the use of antibiotics, which fights antimicrobial resistance.
Smart proteins made in labs have a smaller carbon footprint than regular meat, which helps fight climate change. This is in line with what the Sixth Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says about the need for healthy food systems to deal with the growing threats to global food security.
But in India, the smart protein business is still very new and is having trouble getting funding and getting people to know about it. These gaps need to be filled in order for smart proteins to be widely accepted and understood scientifically.
