BMC said that this initiative is aligned with their urbanism plan to develop the spaces with minimal use of resources. These poles are uniquely designed to give a resemblance to a tree with a solar panel on top and LED lights in its tree-like branches. “These LED lights have two times more luminance power than the conventional ones”, officials added.

Vaqar Javeed, Assistant Municipal Commissioner and in charge of the project highlighted that this initiative can help in cutting costs as it can help reduce the daily energy consumption by up to 35 per cent. “The primary objective is also to spread awareness about using clean and renewable energy”, he added.

Senior officials have also highlighted that since the installation of conventional electric poles is not allowed in forest areas many spots are poorly lit and these solar-powered poles can tackle this problem. Javeed mentioned that BMC has taken permission & NOC from the forest department and SNGP authorities for the installation. “The advantage of setting up solar lights is that we didn’t require additional poles for extending electrical cables,” he further added.
