Bengaluru based NGO to provide 500 cycles to women labourers

In an attempt to empower women and to control the city’s vehicular emission a Bengaluru based NGO Greenpeace India has announced that they will provide 500 bicycles to the low wage women labourers in Bengaluru and Delhi.

The unique initiative is a part of the organization’s ‘Power The Pedal’ campaign and the ultimate goal is to establish a community of 5000 women cyclists, Greenpeace highlighted. Special bicycles have been designed with the help of a private manufacturer to cater for the daily needs of women workers.

While citing the TERI report, Avinash Kumar Chanchal, campaign manager of Greenpeace India highlighted that In urban areas people usually travel from two-wheelers to their workplaces and with the right infrastructure and environment-friendly measures, “India can save nearly Rs 27 billion in fuel and Rs 241 billion due to reduced air pollution”. 

Recently City’s Kempegowda tower at Hudson circle was lit up with the message ‘Cycle for Climate’ as a celebration of the cyclist community of India’s urban society which has been combating air pollution silently.
