BMW increases use of low-carbon steel in series car production

Steel is a major component of car manufacturing. Steel is also one of the most carbon intensive things, as more carbon is produced during the production of steel than steel itself. One of the most popular car manufacturers of Germany- BMW, is switching to low carbon steel now to reduce its carbon footprint.

Joachim Post, a member of the board of management of BMW AG responsible for purchase and supply network, said “Our aim is to reduce vehicles’ lifecycle carbon footprint with a holistic approach. With steel, in particular, we are leading the way by sourcing low-carbon steel for our plants in Europe in the future.”

The company has decided to replace 40% of its steel consumption at its European plants with low carbon steel by the year 2030, this will cut about 400,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emission per year. BMW’s Europeans plants use more than half a million tons of steel every year.

“Our aim is to reduce vehicles’ lifecycle carbon footprint with a holistic approach. With steel, in particular, we are leading the way by sourcing low-carbon steel for our plants in Europe in the future," Joachim Post added.
