The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced plans to provide several mental health resources to help their athletes during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
The step has come into place after a debate started with the US gymnast Simone Biles withdrawing from the women’s team final at the Tokyo Olympics citing mental health illness. There has been a stigma around mental health in sports and the problems haven’t been addressed in the past. But the open confessions from several athletes recently has brought the mental health issue to light.
"We learned a lot in the Tokyo Games and are looking forward to Beijing to better understand what our athletes are needing around mental health," Jessica Bartley, the USOPC's director of mental health said.
