The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA), an Egyptian public organization, jointly hosted the first preparatory meeting to go over the components of a new initiative on climate change and the sustainability of peace.

In addition to experts from the relevant Egyptian ministries and research institutes, the meeting was attended by representatives of international and regional organizations, and international financial and development institutions, including "Elena Panova," the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, "Sylvain Merlin," the UNDP's deputy representative, and an official from the African Union Commission (AUC).

The initiative focuses on the African continent as despite being the continent that contributes the least to this phenomenon, it is the most affected by the consequences of climate change.

It is intended to undertake programs and activities in a number of domains, including those covered by the initiative, namely: climate change adaptation in relation to bolstering peace-building efforts; as well as supporting peace through robust food security systems. Finding long-term solutions that address the connection between climate change and displacement as well as enhancing climate funding are also included in the program.
