A report published by the UNEP highlighted an alarming possibility that the number of global wildfires is expected to rise by 50% by the end of 2050. The report said that the current rate is expected to grow by 20% by 2030 and about 30% by the end of 2050.
The report titled, ‘Spreading like wildfire: The rising Threat of Extraordinary Landscape Fires’ revealed that even the Arctic and other regions are at risk and countries like Russia, Sweden, Canada could witness extreme cases of wildfires due to the rising global temperature.
A massive fire broke out at the Sariska Tiger Reserve on Sunday and the officials claimed that about 8-10 square km of the area has been affected. This has posed a serious threat to the tiger species and other species of flora & fauna.
The published report by UNEP calls for a change in investment patterns on wildfires by the governments around the globe and demands for a “shift in their investments from reaction and response to prevention and preparedness” to prevent the wildlife species and the ecosystem from the harmful carbon emissions.
