Vedanta To Use 380MW Green Energy For Aluminum

Vedanta Aluminium has announced that its smelters will now run on 380 MW of renewable power; it is expected to help the company reduce its emissions by cutting 15,00,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The company in a statement said that the 180 MW will be used for the aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda, in Odisha; the other 200MW will be used for the Bharat Aluminum Company (BALCO) at Korba, in Chhattisgarh.

To fulfil the promises of COP26, the emissions from the aluminium industry must be addressed. It contributes 2% to the global annual greenhouse gas emissions which are about 1 billion tonnes and the demand for aluminium is also projected to grow by 50% by the year 2050.

"This 380 MW renewable energy power delivery agreement for our aluminium smelters stands true to our mission of aligning the incentives of growth with the imperatives for the planet," Vedanta CEO aluminium business Rahul Sharma said.
