In the historic move to tackle with the global issue of plastic wastes, 175 nations across the world adopted a resolution at the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi to form an international “legally binding agreement” by the year 2024 to resolve plastic pollution.
The resolution talks about the full lifecycle of plastic that includes its production, design and disposal.
President of the Assembly and Norway’s Minister for Climate and the Environment, Espen Barth Eide said, “Plastic pollution has grown into an epidemic. With today’s resolution we are officially on track for a cure.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in 1950 plastic pollution was about two million tonnes, which increased up to 348 million tonnes in 2017.
The UN agency said that plastic production and pollution adds to the “triple planetary crisis” of climate change, nature loss and pollution.
