The resumed session of the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) held from 28th Febr - March 2022 in Nairobi witnessed some historic resolutions three drafts were presented to address the global plastic pollution.
One of the draft resolutions considered during the assembly was presented by India which highlighted the urgent need for collaborative voluntary actions by member nations.
As per the report published by PIB, with the assertion of India the main focus of ‘national circumstances and capability while taking actions to address plastic pollution’ was incorporated in the text of the resolution to allow developing countries to follow their expansion trajectories.
After long discussions & negotiations during the virtual meeting, the principal objectives of India’s draft resolution were adequately acknowledged in the resolution on “End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument” adopted in the resumed session of UNEA.
The Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav said that the adoption of India’s draft by 175 member nations is “historic”. He further highlighted that under the leadership of PM Modi India is escalating towards achieving the target to end plastic pollution by implementing effective measures such as EPR on plastic packaging, banning single-use plastic articles in the country.
