According to the study, global warming is a major cause of the sea-level rise, and Chennai and Kolkata are particularly vulnerable in India.
As per a new climate change study, Chennai and Kolkata are at high risk if sea levels rise. Yangon, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, the western tropical Pacific islands, and the western Indian Ocean are also at risk, according to PTI.
The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, warned that if high levels of greenhouse gas emissions are not controlled, several Asian cities could face significant consequences by the year 2100. The research looked at how natural sea-level fluctuations affect the projected rise due to global warming and climate change.
Based on climate change, the report predicts that coastal flooding events in Manila, Philippines, will occur 18 times more frequently by 2100 than they did in 2006. They could, however, occur 96 times more frequently due to a combination of climate change and internal climate variability.
