Taking Climate Change Head-On: Tamil Nadu Community Radio Station

In the coastal village of Vizhuthamavadi in Nagapattinam, roughly 320 kilometres south of Chennai, the Development of Humane Action (DHAN) Foundation established the radio station Kalanjiam Samuga Vanoli fourteen years ago.

Using information from the government's disaster management guide, Ranjitha, a radio host at the Kalanjiam Samuga Vanoli radio station and a resident of a nearby community, created plausible responses.

"Against climate change, we fight. Consequently, we live up to our principles. Polluting the environment is just one of many ways we can remove audio from the environment " said, Project Chief Executive Officer of the radio station Muthukumarawami. The studio of Tamil Nadu's first community radio station doesn’t have air conditioning and only had one microphone and two chairs.

Seven to eight villages in the Nagapattinam district are reached by the broadcast, which has a 20-kilometer radius. The stories, which are broadcast on 90.8 megahertz (MHz), are written by and for the community with the aim of enhancing the resilience of this coastal region that is prone to disasters as a result of climate change, which makes India more susceptible to extreme weather occurrences.

A Different Approach By Community Radio

Station director Aparna Shukla stated that "people don't always grasp climate change and the rise in frequency of extreme incidents." Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja in the state in November 2018, Shukla developed a concept to put climate change in context for the rural communities with the aid of the radio station's parent NGO, DHAN Foundation. "Climate change is present, especially if you live in a region affected by it. The suffering is greater and there is a direct impact on livelihood. Many people are destitute and hence quite vulnerable”, she said.

She further added that the ‘Voice of the Vulnerable’ is a group of rural journalists who cover environmental and climate change topics that are typically not reported or discussed in the community. “We're attempting to bundle it and amplify the voice”.
