Sustainable Reverse Supply Chain Creation Requires An “E-Waste Policy”

The Lions Club International and Primus Partners report, titled "The Growing Impact of E-Waste in India," recommended rewarding producers and businesses for providing training programs and certifications to participants in the unofficial sector who take on the duty of fixing, recycling, and reselling electronic products.

The recent report stated that India needs a comprehensive e-waste policy to create a sustainable reverse supply chain and to control the unorganized sector as the nation strives to meet its ambitious climate targets.

Incentives were also proposed to encourage customers to give their recycled e-waste to authorized sellers.

Electronic Upgradation Policy For E-Waste

The government should establish an “Electronic Upgradation Policy” that outlines the responsibility of manufacturers to accept and properly upgrade their products for donation or resale in the market. "E-waste collection should also be made easy and hassle-free for the consumers by offering home-collection services," it was further stated in the report.

It also emphasized the importance of creating sustainable infrastructure for managing e-waste, including e-waste storage facilities, environmentally friendly supply chain transportation, and disposal areas.

In order to produce long-lasting, high-quality products with guaranteed end-of-life procurement, India also needs to have the necessary manufacturing capacity, the report claims.

The report stated that the necessary technology must be imported or developed in order to be able to extract valuable metals from waste because India currently lacks the capability to do so sustainably.

Lions Club International will launch a nationwide e-waste collection campaign titled "Dump and Donate" on January 13 in collaboration with Hindustan E-Waste Management Pvt Ltd (HEW), Primus Partners, and the National Independent Schools Alliance (NISA) with the goal of increasing e-waste recycling in India. The campaign's success will be a critical step in the fight against e-waste and will encourage all parties to accept responsibility and take charge of the issue.
