Study suggests Blue-Green Infrastructure could be a solution for Ahmedabad’s flood-prone regions

A recent study by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun, found that nearly 55% of the area of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) West Zone falls under flood-prone regions.

According to the study, one of the solutions could be to establish an integrated Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) in such densely developed locations.  BGI will also benefit the environment.

The term ‘blue-green infrastructure’ refers to a network that provides the ingredients for addressing urban and climatic challenges through nature-based construction. Stormwater management, climate adaptation, heat stress reduction, increased biodiversity, food production, improved air quality, sustainable energy production, clean water, and healthy soils are key components of this approach.

A BGI strategy advises using more integrated systems-thinking to manage water and green areas in urban settings.

The IIRS researchers have provided a prospective map indicating the appropriateness of a BGI network for the west zone.
