In an attempt to curb the degradation of Amazon’s natural ecosystem, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro signed an official regulation to increase the level of fines for environmental crimes in the region.
As reported by Reuters, the decree mentions the heavy fines for repeat environmental offenders and will help in collecting the pending fines. The other environmental crimes such as illegal hunting, fishing and activities causing pollution are highlighted under the regulation to combat the unauthorized deforestation in the Amazon forest.
This is being considered a landmark step by the Brazilian government toward achieving its target to finish the illegal deforestation by 2028 which was promised at the COP 26 summit held in Glasgow last year. The former environment minister of Brazil Jose Sarney Filho claimed the step to be very crucial to curb the illegal deforestation in the region.“This new step discredited fines as a tool,” he added.
