A city-based college organized a 'bE-Responsible' e-waste collection drive to raise awareness about the harmful impacts of e-waste and how to properly dispose of or recycle it without affecting the environment.
Almost two tonnes of e-waste were gathered throughout the week-long effort. The effort was organized in partnership with Lions District 317D by the departments of botany and computer science at Saint Agnes College in Mangaluru. The garbage was gathered from Saint Agnes College students, sister institutions, and the general public. The garbage gathered will be recycled scientifically.
Froidy Fernandes, director of the department and assistant professor of botany, said they had asked the Lions Club to extend a month-long e-waste collecting effort at Saint Agnes College by a week. Fernandes stated that all sister concern institutions of Saint Agnes, including kindergarten, primary, higher-primary, high school, PUC, undergraduate, and postgraduate institutions, participated in the e-waste collection drive.
The community also helped out by submitting their unwanted electronic devices to the college centres. Cellphones, music players, printers, sound systems, CDs, cassettes, floppy discs, cables, desktops, and heavy electrical items such as refrigerators, keyboards, and other computer accessories were collected during the drive, according to Fernandes.
