Chip Shortage Unlikely To Hit Renewable Energy Industry

The global chip crisis is unlikely to affect India’s renewable energy drive, experts suggest. Although there are some issues with supply and availability of chips, it is unlikely to become very serious.

Chips are used in inverters in solar power projects, sensors for module trackers, converters in wind turbine generators etc. Hetal Gandhi, the director of CRISIL said that stringent COVID policies are a bigger impediment to renewable energy projects in India at the moment.

The geopolitical crisis in China has triggered the semiconductor crisis around the globe and very strict COVID lockdowns in China have made matters worse since the end of 2021. The automobile industry has suffered the heaviest blow due to this crisis. The chip shortage is expected to stretch well into 2023.

“There has been a delay in manufacturing and supply of solar inverters, smart meters, sensors, wireless and wireline communications, monitoring and control systems due to shortage of semiconductor chips. Although we are aware that other developers in the sector are being affected, but we have not faced any considerable impact due to this.” said Ritesh Singhi, senior director procurement and supply chain management, Amp Energy India.
