According to the Renewables 2022 Global Status Report India is the third largest country in terms of setting up renewable power plants, after China (136GigaWatts) and USA (34GW). India set up 15.4 GW of power generation facilities.

India has 160.4 GW of total solar power capacity and wind power contributes 40.1 GW to the energy mix. The report also shows that the growth in renewables has stagnated, rising only minimally from 10.6% in 2009 to 11.7% in 2019. Also, the global pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that followed have resulted in countries switching back to fossil fuels. The political class lacks the momentum for fulfilling what was promised in Paris at the COP26. 35 countries pledged to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, of which only 84 have set economy-wide targets for renewable energy, and only 36 have targets for 100 per cent renewables.
"Although many more governments committed to net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2021, the reality is that, in response to the energy crisis, most countries have gone back to seeking out new sources of fossil fuels and to burning even more coal, oil and natural gas," said REN21's Executive Director.
