The Union Environment Ministry announced the recognition of four more Indian sites - two each from Gujarat and Haryana, as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. India now has 46 such sites in total.
Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary in Jhajjar and Sultanpur National Park in Gurgaon - have been recently included in the Ramsar list. The other two are Thol and Wadhwana in Gujarat. In a tweet Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said, “PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s concern for the environment has led to overall improvement in how India cares for its wetlands. Happy to inform that four more Indian wetlands have got Ramsar recognition as wetlands of international importance.”
Ramsar list aims to evolve and maintain a global network of wetlands which are crucial for the conservation of global biological diversity and for making human life sustainable, through the preservation of their ecosystem.
