On February 15, 2024, a group of 25 mid-career women executives from India's power sector met with Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh, in New Delhi. This conference was a turning point for the WePOWER SAR100 programme, which aims to train 100 female energy experts from Southeast Asia.
Representatives from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Maldives, and various parts of India offered their perspectives on the program, noting its importance in offering global exposure and presenting innovative technology such as vertical solar panels and compressed-air energy storage. Minister Singh congratulated the attendees and recommended greater female engagement in engineering, highlighting meritocracy in career advancement.
Union Power Secretary Shri Pankaj Agarwal praised the importance of training programs for professional advancement and hoped for their institutionalization. The World Bank-led program aims to promote gender diversity in the power sector by addressing preconceptions and providing women professionals with the skills they need to shift to renewable technologies. WePOWER SAR100 intends to empower women through online seminars and on-campus events, promoting regional integration and sustainable energy practices.
