The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-based vehicle ‘Mirai’. The uniquely designed sedan is a part of the pilot project by the leading motor vehicles manufacturer Toyota with an aim to boost the green hydrogen capacity as an alternative fuel for the future.
The pilot project has been initiated in a collaboration between Toyota and International Centre for Automotive Technology which is an India based automotive testing, certification & R&D service firm.
Toyota Mirai is the brand’s flagship model and the second generation product after the recently launched hybrid Camry. The company highlighted that the sedan is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which is used to generate electric power using onboard hydrogen and the company has claimed that the Mirai can cover up to 600 kilometres on a full tank.
In an aim to achieve the net-zero target and reduce the carbon footprint of the vehicles, Toyota is working on green initiatives to reduce the CO2 emissions and has announced to achieve the same by 2050. The statement issued by the brand has also mentioned that they are working to “achieve net-zero carbon (CO2) emission throughout the entire lifecycle that goes well beyond vehicles, addressing our entire value-chain including manufacturing activities”.
