The NGT has instructed the Gujarat government to set aside Rs 2,100 crore in a separate ring-fenced account for capacity building or the establishment of new sewage treatment facilities, wherever necessary, to cope with the state's rising untreated sewage waste that is being discharged into rivers.
The grant will also be utilised for the effective and scientific handling of unprocessed garbage that would otherwise wind up in unscientific dump sites. The order was issued by the NGT on February 23. The NGT issued this ruling while monitoring waste management compliance in response to two Supreme Court judgements issued on September 2, 2014, and February 22, 2017.
According to the NGT Tribunal order, signed by chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Justice Sudhir Agarwal, and expert member Senthil Vel, the Gujarat chief secretary accepted a sewage generation and treatment gap of 1,005 million litres per day, 255 MT of legacy waste, and 1,452 tonnes of unprocessed waste generation per day. "Under normal circumstances, the state would be obligated to pay compensation of around Rs 2,100 crore in accordance with the compensation rate established for other states," the NGT judgement adds.
