According to IEA’s 2020 report, the Netherlands’ 71% energy came from fossil based fuel sources..The country is now going to be the second in the list of countries issuing ban on fossil fuels for heating purposes after Germany.
The Netherlands is banning any new installations of fossil fuel based heaters in homes and mandating hybrid heat pumps for heating purposes, according to the Dutch government’s press release it will cut down natural gas by 60%, they intend to do it by the year 2026. Germany, on the other hand, which intends to ban fossil fuel based heating as early as 2024 believes that it’ll cut the fuel consumption by 80-90%.
“The urgency of sustainability is great, and the pace must be increased. It is also better for everyone’s wallet if we use less natural gas. That is why the cabinet wants the hybrid heat pump to become the standard from 2026 when the central heating boiler needs to be replaced.” explained Hugo de Jonge, minister for housing.
