Kerala institutions are setting the standard for producing electricity from renewable sources and selling the extra to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Limited. Every month, one of the colleges sends the KSEB grid about 5,000 units of electricity.
The solar farms at almost all of these colleges are linked to the KSEB grid. According to Binoy Joseph, principal of the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences in Kalamassery, "We generate about 250kWp of electricity and we are the first college in Kerala to be totally powered by solar energy." The college building's 30,000 square feet of solar panels make for an impressive sight.
The college sends roughly 5,000 units of electricity per month to the KSEB grid, said Binoy Joseph. The electricity needs of St Teresa's College are satisfied by solar energy, according to Alphonsa Vijaya, the college's principal. Every day, the college produces 100kWp of electricity. As soon as the new set of panels is put into service, another 70kWp will be generated.
St. Xavier's College in Aluva also mostly sources its electricity from solar energy. According to Liss Maries, an assistant professor at St. Xavier's College, "We have 24 solar panels producing 8kWp of electricity.".
Colleges Promote Environmental Awareness
While other large institutions like St Teresa's College, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, UC College, Aluva, St Xavier's College, and Bharata Mata College use solar energy to power their facilities, Sacred Heart College at Thevara is utilizing both wind and solar energy. In addition to lowering power costs, these universities are promoting green power generation, and some of these colleges have even won awards for their green power programs
Dr. Mathew George, the EnCon club coordinator at Sacred Heart College, claims that with the installation of the windmill, the college became the first and most likely the only educational facility in the state to produce electricity utilizing wind energy.
Sacred Heart College received the Energy Conservation Award for 2021–2022, in recognition of our efforts to use green energy. The college uses renewable energy in an effort to teach its pupils the value of going green and energy conservation.
