The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) will place 50 e-waste collection bins at different locations in Bengaluru, including Vidhana Soudha and the High Court, and at 100 other locations in the other parts of the state. It’s a new approach to tackle E- waste and bring the large portion of the waste under regulated organized waste treatment systems.
The unregulated recycler units which use methods of disposal like open incineration and acid leaching affecting the environment are the major processors of E-waste because of the low cost of handling. The problem is also of non compliance.The manufacturing companies, which under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), are required to take accountability of the their products which end up in land dumps and canals, are not complying to the norms.
About 1,00,250 metric tonnes of e-waste was generated in the year 2021-22, of which only 40 per cent reached the recycling and refurbishment units in 2020-2021. Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has given license to about 150 entities to process E-Waste, out of which only 86 are operating.
