In an attempt to reduce the dependency on electricity and firewood to run heating systems in the extremely cold regions of Leh, engineers have developed a bio-gas-powered floor heating system. The Ministry of Science and Technology reported that the eco-friendly project initiated at the Thiksey Village Leh is fulfilled in collaboration with the SMEF’s Brick School of Architecture and the Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering.
The statement mentions that the new floor heating system is cost-effective and eco-friendly and will help reduce the carbon footprint. The heating system receives grey water into a boiler, which gets heated with the use of biogas and then distributed through pipes spread under the flooring. These pipes carry the hot water that transfers heat to the surface of the flooring.
As per the report published in The Tribune, citizens in Leh and Ladakh have started deforestation, which is alarming as the region has a little green cover. People cut down trees in large numbers during the winter months to warm their homes using firewood. The official statement released by the ministry said that the new innovation aims to reduce deforestation in the region and lower GHG emissions.
