India signs up for 70-nation group focused at environmental protection

As of today, India entered the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People. It is a collaboration of more than 70 member countries pushing for the adoption of a goal to protect at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean by the year 2030. The MoEFCC Secretary, Rameshwar Prasad Gupta forwarded the agreement to French Ambassador Emmanuel Lenain.

The HAC sees participation from the global north and south including countries from Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. India’s involvement comes as a first among the BRICS nations and a step-up to the high-level meet on environment.

The meeting will be held virtually between October 11-15, and the key factors will be discussed regarding the biodiversity treaty, which is to be finalized in 2022. The worldwide 30x30 goal is the centre of the treaty. For the treaty, resource mobilization will also be prioritized.
