India’s first-ever portable solar rooftop system was successfully installed at Swaminarayan Akshardham temple situated in Gandhinagar. The project has been backed by the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
This initiative is a part of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's aim to develop renewable energy cities across India. GIZ has installed a total of 10 PV systems in the temple. The "PV Port" is a standardized plug-n-play plus grid-interactive photovoltaic system with battery storage, which is designed for 100% self-consumption.
“The PV Port system is highly cost-effective, requires low maintenance, has a long shelf life of 25-30 years, can be easily installed by a single person and is ideal for the Indian climate”, the statement highlighted. These PV systems have a unique design as compared to the conventional ones which allows using the space below the panels. This directly helps to save around Rs 24,000 on electricity bills annually.
