The  Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022, released on 5th of June this year ranked countries on the basis of 40 parameters. India ranked the lowest in their list this year and in return the India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change criticized the report citing non-scientific methods used in making the reports. According to Yale and Columbia Universities, the countries that have made it to the top of ranks have exhibited sustained commitment to sustainability, preservation of biodiversity, environmental health and natural resources through their policies.

“This is computed based on the average rate of change in emission of the last 10 years instead of modeling that takes into account a longer time period, extent of renewable energy capacity and use, additional carbon sinks, energy efficiency etc. of respective countries,” said India’s environment ministry in response to the report.

Martin Wolf said that India’s denial of the report is worrisome as the report has been prepared on the basis of empirical data, and India’s performance has been poor in terms of preserving biodiversity and maintaining air quality.
