The ongoing shortage of fuel across the world due to the Russia-Ukraine war has exponentially increased the fossil fuel investments from the countries. The UN Chief António Guterres described it as “delusional” and added that this would only feed the war and worsen the climate change impacts.
The UN Chief’s statement came during the 6th Austrian World Summit on the climate crisis organised by the Austrian government and Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He further urged the G20 nations to lower their coal dependency and phase out the coal by 2030 and asked the global economies to halt their fossil fuel investments and escalate the investment in renewable energy. The only chance to limit the global temperature under 1.5 degrees celsius and climate change is by cutting the carbon emissions by 45% by 2030, he said.
“The only true path to energy security, stable power prices, prosperity and a liveable planet lies in abandoning polluting fossil fuels, especially coal, and accelerating the renewables-based energy transition”, he added.
