IIT Madras to Facilitate E-waste Through Online Marketplace

IIT Madras will develop an E-commerce platform to manage E- waste, and keep the formal and informal sector connected through it. Named E-source, this platform will create a demand and supply chain between buyers and sellers of electronic products. The initiative has been taken by the Indo-German Sustainability Centre (IGSC).

They highlighted the demand for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which are reusable or recyclable, so this initiative will help in linking them. Prof. Sudhir Chella Ranjan, a faculty of IGSC talked of the heedless dumping that is becoming a major problem for India, or they are entirely dismantled to obtain valuable metals which render them useless, through E-source, the lack of re-use will be solved.

The IIT Madras in their press release further elaborated that it is data-driven and uses machine learning to operate. Studies suggest that currently, the world generates 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste annually, which is expected to double in the next 16 years. E-waste is a big problem for India too, technological innovations like E-source will put India at the forefront of E-waste management.
