University of Maineled international research team that analyzed data from the world's highest ice core and highest automatic weather stations. According to them, the impacts of human induced climate effects have reached the point where it is resulting in the loss of several decades worth of glacier accumulation annually
It could result in an increase in the instances of avalanches and could adversely affect water availability in the Himalayan region and Indian northern plains which is home to about 1 Billion people
The study points to the critical balance snow-covered surfaces provide and the "potential for loss throughout high mountain glacier systems as snow cover is depleted by changes in sublimation—passing from a solid to vapour state—and surface melt driven by climate trends. Everest's highest glacier has served as a sentinel for this delicate balance and has demonstrated that even the roof of the Earth is impacted by anthropogenic source warming," the researchers note in their paper.
