Farmers in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, are adopting climate-friendly agricultural methods under an initiative by Indonesia's Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS). Since its inception in 2019, the program has brought transformative changes, ending land burning and fostering positive impacts.
Over 121 coastal West Kalimantan villages have embraced the initiative, acquiring new skills that reduce fire risks and benefit communities. Farmers are experiencing a remarkable 50% increase in incomes and growing high-value crops due to the shift away from traditional burning practices. This transformation not only prevents fires but also curbs greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative’s impact is particularly notable in peatland regions, characterized by organic-rich soil prone to catastrophic fires and carbon dioxide release. Farmers have received training in non-burning agriculture techniques, enabling cultivation of valuable crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, chili, and eggplants. Consequently, the peatland areas are regaining moisture, restoring their vitality and promoting sustainable vegetation growth. Infrastructure upgrades are a key aspect of the project, with the construction of canal blockers – structures retaining water in peatland canals – funded and designed in partnership with UNOPS. Improved irrigation mitigates land degradation, decreases carbon dioxide emissions, and lowers fire risks. So far, 179 canal blockers have been established in 27 villages.
Community involvement is pivotal for project success. The UNOPS model, adapted and refined over time, forms the basis of the initiative. However, enduring change from traditional practices to sustainable agriculture necessitates active engagement from all stakeholders. Though substantial progress has been achieved, more work lies ahead. Numerous villages in Kalimantan, Papua, and Sumatra require restoration efforts. Long-term dedication from all parties is crucial to protect peatlands, combat climate change, and enhance livelihoods. This initiative’s success underscores the potential to achieve economic growth while preserving the environment through sustainable practices.
