FAO: The State of the World’s Forests 2022

FAO ( Food And Agriculture Organization) has published its bi-annually forest report called The State of the World’s Forests 2022, the report explores the potential of three pathways for achieving forest recovery and tackling the environmental crisis

The three pathways are;:

  • Halting deforestation and maintaining forests.
  •
  • Restoring degraded lands and expanding agroforestry.
  •
  • Sustainably using forests and building green value chains.

The report suggests that a sustained pursuit of these pathways will help address environment related challenges.

Earth’s 31% of the surface area is covered with forest, but in recent years it has been decreasing at the rate of 10 million hectares per year. Forests are a large reserve of carbon and stopping deforestation means stopping about 4-5 gigatonnes of CO2 from being emitted and restoring already degraded land could mean sucking .9- 1.5 gigatonnes of carbon from air.

Deforestation happens for agriculture or illegal wildlife trade, these things should be prevented and new ways of agriculture should be adopted like agroforestry which involves the use of forest land for agriculture without cutting the forest.

Since wood is a great material that is used widely and had 90% less carbon footprint than any other material, the report recommends reforestation on large scales to satisfy the demands of building material.
